Blustery conditions greatly
reduced the number of finishers for Welland Yacht Club's Norwich
and Peterborough Salva regatta.
Although
the sun was shining, a strong gusting wind greeted the sailors
for race one resulting in a number of boats even failing to cross
the start line. Of those that managed to start, Charlotte and
Andy Prior (National 12) were first around the windward mark with
Richard Thacker and Tom Bell (Wayfarer), Tim and Nicky Wilson
(Enterprise), Chris Prior (Laser) and Adam Wilson (OK) in the
pack close behind. The strong wind blowing down the river then
produced some spectacular reaching with all the boats, bar Adam
Wilson, following a spectacular capsize, closely grouped by the
time the bottom mark was rounded. The long beat back up the river
allowed the Prior's National 12 to pull out a good lead and allow
Chris Prior to overtake Thacker's Wayfarer. These places were
maintained for the rest of the race with the Wilsons finishing
fourth and Adam Wilson recovering to take 5th place.
The afternoon saw the wind freshen further reducing the number
of starters. The race followed a similar pattern to the first
but with considerably more capsizes, with both Chris Prior and
Adam Wilson competing for the 'most spectacular' capsize of the
day. Again it was the Prior's who made the best start and held
a small lead from Thacker's Wayfarer and the Enterprise of the
Wilsons with Adam Wilson and Chris Prior both taking time to recover
from their swims. The Prior's were able to extend their lead and
survive the increasing wind to take the race by a comfortable
margin from Thacker's Wayfarer despite some excellent teamwork
from the Wayfarer crew. Chris Prior managed to overtake the Enterprise
on a couple of occasions only to succumb to the now gale force
winds and had to be content with third place.
Race three was cancelled due to the strong winds and a lack of
sailable boats leaving the Prior's with first place and Thacker
and Bell taking a highly commendable second place ahead of Prior's
Laser. The Wilsons took fourth place capitalising on consistent
sailing throughout the day
